  • Facility integrates ammonia and CO2 storage.

  • Solar power supports Mesaieed blue ammonia plant.

DOHA (The Thursday Times) — Qatar Energy has officially laid the foundation stone for a blue ammonia facility in Mesaieed Industrial City, marking a significant investment in sustainable energy solutions. The project, valued at over 4 billion Qatari rials, aims to position Qatar as a leader in clean energy production, aligning with global demand for low-carbon fuels and sustainable industrial practices.

Blue ammonia to drive sustainable energy goals

The facility will feature a cutting-edge ammonia production unit with an annual capacity exceeding a million tonnes, alongside a CO2 injection and storage unit capable of managing substantial volumes of carbon emissions. This dual-purpose approach highlights Qatar’s commitment to integrating clean energy technologies into traditional industries.

Blue ammonia, produced using low-carbon methods, is expected to play a pivotal role in decarbonising global energy systems. By capturing and storing CO2, the project will contribute to reducing industrial emissions while supplying essential inputs for fertiliser production and emerging clean energy markets.

Solar energy integration in industrial operations

Qatar Energy’s reliance on renewable energy sources for this project sets a precedent for industrial sustainability. Over 35 megawatts of solar-generated electricity will power the facility, showcasing Qatar’s strides toward incorporating renewable energy into large-scale operations.

The Mesaieed solar power plant, currently under construction, reflects the country’s broader efforts to diversify energy sources and enhance energy efficiency across critical infrastructure. This integration aligns with Qatar’s vision to reduce its carbon footprint while maintaining its position as a leading energy exporter.

Strategic partnerships strengthen project execution

The construction of the blue ammonia plant is being executed by a consortium comprising ThyssenKrupp and Consolidated Contractors Company. These strategic partnerships ensure the incorporation of advanced engineering and construction methodologies to optimise operational efficiency.

Qatar Energy is collaborating closely with Qatar Fertiliser Company to leverage its existing expertise in ammonia production. This cooperation underscores Qatar’s strategy to utilise domestic capabilities while engaging global leaders to achieve technological and operational excellence.
