TLDR:

  • Dubai begins work on first vertiport

  • Air taxis to cut travel times

  • Skyports partners on infrastructure

DUBAI (The Thursday Times) — The pioneering development of Dubai’s first air taxi station, located near Dubai International Airport, has commenced as part of the city’s ambitious plan to revolutionise urban mobility. This launch marks the first phase in a vision to establish Dubai as a world leader in aerial transport infrastructure, with key locations set to include Downtown, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. Expected to launch in 2026, the aerial taxi service aims to reduce travel times significantly across these routes and ease congestion on Dubai’s busy roadways.

Designed in collaboration with Skyports Infrastructure, the vertiports will feature dedicated areas for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, supporting the service’s vision of sustainable, zero-emission travel. Covering an expansive 3,100-square-metre area, the DXB vertiport alone is projected to handle up to 42,000 landings and accommodate around 170,000 passengers annually. With this infrastructure in place, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and international operator Joby Aviation will oversee the service’s management, while the General Civil Aviation Authority and the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority will maintain governance.

Advanced aerial transport network takes shape

The introduction of this air taxi system represents Dubai’s latest innovation in aligning with global trends in green transportation. Joby Aviation, a US-based company known for its eVTOL technology, will provide the aircraft—a highly advanced model capable of vertical take-off and landing, equipped with six rotors, four battery packs, and a flight range of up to 161 kilometres. Designed to transport four passengers along with a pilot, the aircraft operates at lower noise levels than traditional helicopters and can reach speeds of 321 kilometres per hour, offering a quick and quiet alternative for urban commutes.

Strategic stations

The network will consist of four strategically located stations: Dubai International Airport, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. Each location will include take-off and landing pads, charging facilities, passenger lounges, and streamlined security measures. The network is envisioned to integrate with Dubai’s other public transportation modes, providing residents and tourists with efficient, eco-friendly travel options. Additionally, the service aims to reduce the journey from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah to approximately 10 to 12 minutes, a major improvement over current peak-hour travel times.

Dubai’s RTA, working in collaboration with Skyports and Joby Aviation, aims to make this project a seamless addition to the city’s existing transport network. With Skyports overseeing the infrastructure and Joby managing the aircraft operations, the project benefits from expertise in aerial mobility and sustainable transport solutions. This initiative follows a recently signed agreement with the RTA and various aviation authorities, solidifying Dubai’s role as a global innovator in future mobility solutions.
