Trump praises Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir in address to US generals

US President Donald Trump, in an address to American generals, praised Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir for recognising his role in stopping a potential Pakistan–India war and saving millions of lives. Trump called the praise an honour, referenced the downing of seven planes, and said trade pressure was used to defuse the crisis.

WASHINGTON (The Thursday Times) — US President Donald Trump has claimed he personally intervened to stop a potentially devastating war between Pakistan and India, insisting his actions saved millions of lives and prevented a global crisis.

Speaking at an event with American generals in Virginia, Trump recounted a recent meeting with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, the country’s powerful army chief. According to Trump, Munir told him directly, “President Trump stopped a terrible war and saved millions of lives.” Trump described the remark as deeply moving and said he considered it an honour.

Trump portrayed the episode as one of the most significant of his presidency, arguing that the conflict had been far closer to breaking out than the public realised. He said both nuclear-armed rivals were “at the brink” after seven planes were shot down in a dramatic escalation.

“I called both countries and told them very clearly: if you go to war, the United States will not trade with you,” Trump said. “That was the turning point.”

According to Trump, the standoff lasted four days before tensions eased under American pressure. He said his intervention prevented what could have been a catastrophic regional war with global consequences. “We did not just save millions,” he declared. “We saved tens of millions, perhaps more, and stopped the world from facing a major crisis.”
