Republicans close in on House majority

Republicans near House majority as remaining results are tallied; Senate looks set to support Trump’s policy aims, with crucial battlegrounds in Arizona and Nevada.

TLDR:

  • Republicans hold narrow lead for US House

  • Key races remain uncalled across states

  • Senate poised to support Trump’s agenda

WASHINGTON (The Thursday Times) — Donald Trump’s Republicans have held a tight advantage in the U.S. House of Representatives, inching closer to a slim majority as remaining results are tallied. With seven seats needed for control, Republicans are on the cusp of significant legislative power. The implications are enormous, as a majority in both chambers would provide Trump with sweeping influence over national policy, including tax reform, energy deregulation, and stricter immigration controls.

Nearing the house majority

Republicans have secured control over at least two hundred seats, needing only a few more to claim the majority in the House. With twenty-four races still unresolved, the balance hangs on key contests across California and New York. Democrats, determined to halt Trump’s influence in Congress, have managed to flip two seats in New York—an achievement that has injected some optimism into their pursuit of the remaining uncalled seats. However, the GOP’s consistent hold over other regions has kept their path to victory within reach.

Senate provides strategic edge for Trump

Beyond the House, Republicans are positioned to retain a solid Senate majority. With a minimum of fifty seats likely, the GOP will have the leverage to push Trump’s cabinet appointments, judicial selections, and other key nominations through. While most legislation requires sixty votes for expedited passage, a Republican Senate will be instrumental in shaping U.S. policies aligned with Trump’s administration.

Democratic successes in New York have underscored their ongoing fight to counter the Republican push. Figures like Laura Gillen, who ousted Republican Anthony D’Esposito, have rejuvenated Democratic efforts in Republican-dominated territories. Yet, in other close contests, Republicans have demonstrated resilience. In Nebraska, centrist Republican Don Bacon fended off a challenge from Democrat Tony Vargas in Omaha, keeping a stronghold in a typically liberal area.

Battlegrounds in Arizona and Nevada

With tight margins and high stakes, the Senate races in Nevada and Arizona remain focal points. Democrat Jacky Rosen holds a slender lead over Republican Sam Brown in Nevada, while Ruben Gallego is similarly ahead in Arizona. Should these races fall into the Democratic column, they could provide a crucial counterbalance to Republican ambitions in the Senate.
