TLDR:
Riyadh Metro marks a new urban milestone.
State-of-the-art transit connects six metro lines.
Visionary project highlights Saudi modernisation.
RIYADH (The Thursday Times) — King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has officially inaugurated the Riyadh Metro, a landmark infrastructure project that redefines urban mobility in Saudi Arabia. Spanning 176 kilometres with six lines and 85 stations, the Metro is a pivotal component of Riyadh’s public transport system, aligning with the Kingdom’s ambitious urban development goals.
A visionary leap for public transport
The Riyadh Metro, one of the largest transit projects globally built in a single phase, underscores Saudi Arabia’s drive for modernisation and sustainable urban growth. With six metro lines interconnecting the city, the project is designed to serve as the backbone of Riyadh’s evolving transport network. The network’s phased launch will commence with three primary lines: the Blue Line, Yellow Line, and Purple Line, soon to be followed by the Red, Green, and Orange Lines.
Cutting-edge design and global collaboration
A blend of engineering ingenuity and international collaboration has made the Riyadh Metro a reality. Contracts for the project were awarded to three global consortia—BACS, FAST, and ANM—bringing together 19 major companies from 13 countries. The trains, manufactured by Siemens, Bombardier, and Alstom, incorporate advanced technology with features such as flexible interior separators for designated classes: First, Families, and Singles.
The design, curated by France’s Avant Premiere, combines functionality with modern aesthetics. Each train consists of two to four cars, operating seamlessly across underground, surface-level, and elevated tracks.
Economic impact and sustainability
The Riyadh Metro can accommodate up to 3.6 million passengers daily, significantly reducing reliance on private vehicles and alleviating traffic congestion. The project aligns with Saudi Arabia’s sustainability goals by reducing carbon emissions and integrating with Riyadh’s newly launched bus network to create an interconnected public transport system.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the Metro is set to generate economic activity by enhancing accessibility and mobility for residents and businesses. It is expected to create jobs across construction, operations, and maintenance while boosting real estate values around transit hubs.
A symbol of Saudi progress
The Riyadh Metro stands as a testament to the Kingdom’s commitment to future-focused development under the leadership of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. By integrating cutting-edge infrastructure with urban planning, the Metro not only transforms Riyadh’s mobility but also positions the city as a model for innovation in the Gulf region.
