Erdogan declares he and Putin as the world’s only true leaders

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has described himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin as the only remaining experienced leaders in the world.

TLDR:

  • Erdogan and Putin as enduring leaders

  • Merkel’s absence marks political shifts

  • Schröder’s respect lauded by Erdogan

ANKARA (The Thursday Times) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has described himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin as the only remaining experienced leaders in the world. Erdogan highlighted their long-standing tenure in power, positioning it against the transient leadership in Western nations, particularly after the departure of Germany’s Angela Merkel.

Erdogan’s claim to leadership longevity

Erdogan pointed to his 22 years in office, almost mirroring Putin’s time in power, as a marker of unparalleled political experience. He contrasted this with what he characterised as a lack of enduring leadership in other countries, underscoring that most influential figures have since “gone.” Erdogan asserted that sustained dialogue between himself and Putin was critical for political continuity in an increasingly fragmented global arena.

Merkel’s departure and European void

In Erdogan’s assessment, German politics faced a significant shift with Angela Merkel’s exit. He argued that her resignation marked the “end of politics” in Germany, attributing her departure to a weakening of the stabilising forces in European governance. Merkel’s leadership, often viewed as a cornerstone of EU cohesion, was highlighted as a benchmark now absent in the current European political landscape.

Schröder as a symbol of mutual respect

Erdogan also reflected on his interactions with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, praising the latter’s cultural sensitivity and leadership qualities. He recalled Schröder’s respect for traditions, citing his abstinence from beer during Ramadan dinners as a gesture of regard. Erdogan emphasised that his dialogue with Schröder remains active, with the former chancellor continuing to visit Turkey periodically, embodying a bygone era of respectful international diplomacy.
