Musk became the first person in history to reach a trillion-dollar fortune in June, after his rocket company SpaceX went public on the Nasdaq and closed its first trading day with a market capitalisation of nearly $2.2 trillion. His personal wealth has fluctuated sharply since, falling below $700 billion in July before recovering through August and into September as SpaceX and Tesla shares rebounded.
Michael Dell has climbed into fourth place, ahead of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, reflecting a strong run for Dell Technologies shares. Two familiar names sit just outside the top 10: Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffett at $143.8 billion and LVMH’s Bernard Arnault at $134.4 billion, both only a few billion dollars behind Ortega’s $146.9 billion in tenth place. Ortega, the founder of Zara owner Inditex, remains the only non-American in the top 10.
