ISLAMABAD (The Thursday Times) — General Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), presided over the 84th Formation Commanders Conference at GHQ, highlighting Pakistan Army’s unwavering commitment to national security, operational excellence, and socioeconomic progress. Attended by Corps Commanders, Principal Staff Officers, and all Formation Commanders, the conference reviewed internal and external security threats, counterterrorism efforts, and the nation’s evolving security landscape.

Paying tribute to national martyrs

The conference opened with tributes to the martyrs of the Armed Forces, law enforcement agencies, and citizens who sacrificed their lives for Pakistan’s sovereignty and security. Special mention was made of those who embraced martyrdom during recent violent protests in Islamabad. The gathering solemnly acknowledged their contributions, underscoring their role in safeguarding national interests.

Counterterrorism and operational readiness

The forum conducted an in-depth review of the security environment, focusing on the evolving nature of traditional and non-traditional threats. Operational readiness remained a central theme, with emphasis on neutralising terrorist threats in sensitive areas like Balochistan. Participants resolved to dismantle terror networks and disrupt hostile activities aimed at destabilising Pakistan, including operations against groups such as the BLA Majeed Brigade.

Concerns were raised over the use of Afghan soil by terrorists targeting Pakistan, with a call for Afghanistan to take visible measures to curb such activities. The importance of mutual cooperation between the two neighbouring countries was reiterated.

Condemnation of human rights violations

The conference strongly condemned human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, reaffirming Pakistan’s steadfast support for the Kashmiri people. Solidarity with Palestinians was also emphasised, with participants denouncing the ongoing atrocities in Gaza and calling for international legal action to address the situation.

Tackling misinformation and propaganda

The forum expressed grave concerns over malicious propaganda aimed at discrediting the Army’s lawful deployment during recent unrest. Such premeditated attempts were described as efforts to create divisions between the public and national institutions. The forum called for stricter laws to address the spread of fake news and unethical use of freedom of expression for political or financial gains.

Participants stressed that any attempts to incite violence or sow discord within society would be countered with firm resolve. The Army reaffirmed its apolitical stance and dedication to serving the nation without bias.

Commitment to socioeconomic progress

The conference underscored the Army’s role in supporting government-led initiatives for economic growth and stability. Efforts to eradicate illegal activities, strengthen border security, and foster socioeconomic development in regions like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were highlighted. The forum pledged continued support for projects aimed at uplifting the resilience of these provinces against terrorism and fostering inclusive growth.
