Pakistan Army condemns Afghanistan terrorism nexus, vows a relentless fight

Pakistan’s DG-ISPR slammed past political missteps for empowering terrorism, exposed Afghanistan's role in cross-border militancy, and reaffirmed the army's unwavering commitment to eradicating threats amid escalating regional tensions with India.

RAWALPINDI (The Thursday Times) — Pakistan’s military spokesperson delivered a hard-hitting press conference, addressing internal and external challenges, ongoing counterterrorism efforts, and controversial past decisions that have shaped the nation’s security landscape.

Questions on double politics and past decisions

Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif, the Director General of ISPR, questioned past political decisions, calling out individuals who advocated for negotiations with militant groups despite their track record of violence. He accused these decisions of empowering terrorists, leaving the nation’s law enforcement and armed forces to pay the price in blood. Sharif highlighted how flawed policies led to the resurgence of militants who had been on the verge of defeat in 2021.

Afghanistan as the sole nexus of terrorism

The DG ISPR pointed to Afghanistan as the central hub for terrorist activities against Pakistan, asserting that evidence ties cross-border attacks to sanctuaries in the neighbouring country. Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts with the Afghan interim government, he emphasised the lack of cooperation in curbing militant operations. He reminded audiences of Pakistan’s long-standing support for Afghan stability, hosting millions of refugees while remaining steadfast in prioritising the safety of its own citizens.

Progress in counterterrorism operations

Pakistan’s armed forces have ramped up counterterrorism operations nationwide. Over the past year, thousands of operations dismantled militant networks, seized foreign-made weapons, and prevented numerous attacks. Sharif revealed that this year marked a record number of militant casualties, including high-profile figures from various terror factions. The military also uncovered and foiled cross-border plans, arresting operatives and preventing large-scale attacks.

Sacrifices of the Armed Forces

Sharif paid tribute to the military personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty, noting that hundreds of officers and soldiers embraced martyrdom this year. He urged the public to recognise the sacrifices made to ensure national security and highlighted the ongoing commitment of the armed forces to eliminate terrorism from every corner of the country.

Indian aggression and regional tensions

On the eastern border, Sharif addressed increasing ceasefire violations by India, accusing the neighbouring country of using aggression to mask internal political issues. He underscored Pakistan’s readiness to respond decisively to any provocations, reaffirming the army’s capability to defend the nation’s sovereignty. He also criticised India’s human rights abuses in Kashmir, pointing to systemic violence against minorities and suppression of dissent as issues demanding international attention.

Rebuilding through socio-economic efforts

Beyond counterterrorism, Pakistan’s military remains actively engaged in socio-economic development, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Key infrastructure projects, education initiatives, and public services continue to improve living conditions in these regions. Sharif also noted the advancements in border management systems that have reduced illegal crossings and smuggling, enhancing national security.

Commitment to fight till the last terrorist

Reiterating the army’s resolve, Sharif stated that the fight against terrorism would continue relentlessly until the last terrorist is eliminated. He urged for unified governance and an end to political point-scoring over critical national security issues.
