LONDON (The Thursday Times) — Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar met with the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy in London on Wednesday in order to discuss the state of bilateral relations. Foreign Secretary Lammy congratulated Dar on Pakistan’s recent election to the UN Security Council, pledging the UK’s support throughout Pakistan’s term. Pakistan was elected as a non-permanent member in June, receiving 182 out of 193 votes in the UN General Assembly.
A statement from the Foreign Office (FO) emphasised Mr Dar’s commitment to strengthening the Pakistan-UK partnership, promoting regional peace, and advancing a broad bilateral agenda.
During the meeting, the two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of relations between their countries and addressed regional matters of mutual concern. Dar expressed Pakistan’s interest in collaborating with the UK on key issues, such as climate change, opportunities for youth, and enhancing trade and investment. He also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to elevating its relationship with the UK to a strategic partnership and praised the role of the British-Pakistani community in fostering these ties.
Mr Dar emphasised the importance of this partnership in promoting regional peace and stability, while also lauding the contributions of the British-Pakistani community in strengthening ties between the two nations. Lammy, in turn, congratulated Pakistan on its recent election to the UN Security Council, reiterating the UK’s support for the country during its tenure.
Both leaders also discussed regional issues of common interest, underscoring the significance of continued collaboration as the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting approaches in October 2024.
