DELHI (The Thursday Times) — AIMIM chief and Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi has spoken out firmly against the upcoming India vs Pakistan match in the Asia Cup 2025, citing ethical and emotional reasons. The match, scheduled for September 14, has drawn criticism from several political leaders who feel it is inappropriate so soon after the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam earlier this year.
Speaking during a special Lok Sabha session focused on Operation Sindoor — India’s retaliatory military operation targeting terror camps following the April attack — Owaisi said he personally cannot justify watching a cricket match against Pakistan under current circumstances.
“When Pakistani aircraft aren’t allowed into our airspace, when their boats can’t enter our waters, when trade ties have been suspended, and when we are stopping 80% of their water, stating that blood and water cannot flow together — how can we justify playing cricket with them?” he asked. “My conscience does not allow me to watch that match.”
Owaisi challenged the government to reflect on the message being sent to the families of the victims of the April 22 attack, which claimed the lives of 25 civilians and a local guide. “Would the government be willing to tell the families of those killed that justice has been served, and now it’s time to enjoy a cricket match?” he said.
The Asia Cup 2025 will begin on September 9, with eight nations participating. The India-Pakistan clash on September 14 is expected to draw major viewership, given the historical rivalry between the two teams. However, public sentiment remains divided, especially given the recent loss of lives and the political tensions between the two countries.
There is also a strong possibility that India and Pakistan could meet again in the Super Four stage, and potentially in the final, depending on their performance in the group phase.
