General (r) Faiz Hameed sentenced to fourteen years after court martial

A fifteen-month military trial ends in a landmark conviction as Pakistan’s defence establishment moves to distance itself from political turbulence.

ISLAMABAD (THE THURSDAY TIMES) — Pakistan’s military has announced the conviction and sentencing of former Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed after a fifteen-month court martial that examined allegations of political interference, misuse of authority and violations of state secrecy.

ISPR confirmed on Wednesday that former Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed has been sentenced to fourteen years of rigorous imprisonment after being found guilty on all charges in a sweeping Field General Court Martial that spanned more than a year. The case, initiated on 12 August 2024 under the Pakistan Army Act, marks one of the most consequential prosecutions of a senior military figure in recent memory and signals an unusually public attempt by the army to assert institutional discipline.

According to the ISPR statement, Mr Faiz Hameed faced four charges. These related to engagement in political activities, violations of the Official Secrets Act deemed harmful to national security, misuse of official authority and state resources, and causing wrongful loss to individuals. The allegations echoed long-standing public debates about his perceived political outreach and his role in shaping civilian affairs during previous administrations.

The court martial, described by officials as lengthy and labour intensive, concluded that the accused had acted in ways detrimental to the State’s safety and interests. The findings were formally promulgated on 11 December 2025. Officials noted that the proceedings adhered to all legal provisions, with Mr Hameed afforded full rights, including the freedom to appoint a defence team of his choosing. He retains the right to appeal before the relevant military tribunal.
