GoFundMe for Bondi Beach hero tops $1.3m after bystander disarms gunman

Donations surge after video shows civilian bravery amid chaos on Sydney’s beachfront

SYDNEY (The Thursday Times) — A GoFundMe campaign set up to support the man who disarmed one of the attackers during the Bondi Beach shooting has surged past $1.3 million, as Australians and donors abroad rallied around a moment of civilian bravery captured on video.

The appeal, titled Support the Hero Who Disarmed a Bondi Attacker, was launched after footage showed a bystander charging an armed man, forcing him to the ground and pulling the gun from his hands amid panic along the beachfront. Organisers said the intervention likely prevented further loss of life.

The man has been identified as Ahmed al Ahmed, a Sydney small business owner and father, who was shot during the confrontation and taken to hospital. Family members said he underwent surgery and remains under medical care, with further treatment expected, but is stable.

The video shows al Ahmed approaching from behind near parked cars, tackling the attacker and moving the weapon out of reach as people fled the scene. Witnesses described confusion and fear as shots rang out, before police intervened.

Supporters say al Ahmed migrated to Australia years ago, built a life running a small business and raising a family, and acted instinctively rather than calculating the risks. Public officials and community leaders have praised the act as exceptional civilian courage.

Messages on the fundraising page describe him as selfless and brave, with donations pouring in within hours. Organisers said the funds will help cover medical costs, rehabilitation and support his family during recovery, while urging continued support for all victims of the attack.
