US and Pakistan deepen military ties with Inspired Gambit counterterrorism drills

Recent joint drills at Pakistan’s National Counter Terrorism Centre underline renewed US–Pakistan military cooperation and a shared focus on regional security.

ISLAMABAD (The Thursday Times) — The United States and Pakistan have completed their latest joint military exercise, marking a continued effort by Washington to strengthen defence cooperation in South Asia as both countries confront persistent security challenges.

The two-week exercise, known as Inspired Gambit 2026, concluded on January 16 at Pakistan’s National Counter Terrorism Centre. According to U.S. Central Command, the drills focused on infantry skills, advanced tactical manoeuvres, and counterterrorism operations, with the aim of improving operational coordination and readiness between the two forces.

The exercise was the thirteenth iteration of the Inspired Gambit series since it began in 1995, a longevity that highlights the durability of military-to-military ties between Islamabad and Washington despite periods of political strain. Officials from both sides said the training was designed to enhance mutual trust, refine procedures, and improve interoperability in response to evolving threats from militant groups and transnational crime.

A Distinguished Visitors’ Day ceremony was held on January 15 at NCTC Pabbi, attended by Natalie Baker, Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan, senior American military officials, and the Commander of Pakistan’s Rawalpindi Corps. Observers were briefed on the objectives and scope of the exercise and watched joint demonstrations that officials described as reflecting a high level of professionalism and operational competence.

US and Pakistani officials framed the drills as part of a broader commitment to regional security and stability, with an emphasis on practical cooperation rather than symbolism. American officials said sustained engagement with Pakistan’s armed forces remained central to counterterrorism capacity-building efforts in the region.

As alliances shift and security challenges continue to evolve, the completion of Inspired Gambit 2026 signals that defence cooperation between the United States and Pakistan, while often understated, remains a functional pillar of their bilateral relationship.
