BRUSSELS—The European Union has voiced its deep concern regarding recent events in Sweden, where an individual burned a Quran, and is calling for calm and restraint in response to the incident. The EU has strongly condemned this act, deeming it offensive, disrespectful, and a clear provocation.
In a united front with the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the EU firmly rejects the Quran burning incident, emphasising that the actions of an individual do not reflect the views of the European Union as a whole. The EU reiterates its unwavering stance against all forms of racism, xenophobia, and intolerance within Europe.
The timing of the Quran burning, which occurred during the significant Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha, has further exacerbated the distress caused by this incident. Recognising the importance of religious freedom, the EU underscored the need to respect the beliefs and practices of all communities.
The European Union is committed to upholding freedom of religion or belief as well as freedom of expression within its member states and beyond. These fundamental values lie at the core of the EU’s principles, and it remains steadfast in defending them.
Given the recent events, the EU emphasises the crucial role of promoting mutual understanding, respect, and dialogue among individuals and communities. They stated that it was “imperative” to prevent further escalation and instead work towards fostering an environment of harmony.
“Now more than ever, the EU urges all parties involved to come together, prioritise empathy, and strive for peaceful coexistence,” stated a spokesperson for the European Union. “Cooperation and solidarity are vital in building a future based on respect and understanding.”
