ATLANTA (THE THURSDAY TIMES) — Argentina scored twice in the closing stages to defeat England 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup semi-final, ending England’s hopes of reaching the final for the first time since 1966.
England took the lead in the second half after a tightly contested opening period in which neither side managed to establish control.
Argentina gradually increased the pressure as the match entered its final stages, forcing England deeper and creating a succession of late chances.
The equaliser arrived in the 86th minute when Enzo Fernández found the net to bring Argentina level and shift the momentum of the contest.
With extra time approaching, Argentina completed the turnaround in stoppage time as Lautaro Martínez scored the decisive goal, securing their place in the final.
The result marked another painful World Cup exit for England, who had been only minutes away from advancing before conceding twice late in the match.
Argentina will now meet Spain in the final on 19 July, while England will face France in the third-place play-off on 18 July.
