WASHINGTON (The Thursday Times) — President Donald Trump is willing to give Iran sanctions relief and release frozen funds in return for “concrete progress on nuclear,” a US official told Axios on Monday.
The message comes as Qatari and Pakistani mediators try again this week to broker a deal between Washington and Tehran. Qatari mediators are expected to meet Trump administration officials on Monday or Tuesday.
The two sides remain far apart. Iran wants talks to focus on the Strait of Hormuz and the US naval blockade, while Washington is demanding nuclear concessions. The official said the US is skeptical of Iran’s promises, accusing it of breaking the last memorandum of understanding by firing on commercial ships. No relief has been granted.
