The PTI

Imran Khan’s party: in power from 2018 to 2022, and since then in a running fight with the state from the opposition benches and the streets.

The essentials

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, the Pakistan Movement for Justice, was founded by Imran Khan in Lahore in 1996. After years on the margins it won the most seats in the 2018 general election and led the federal government until Khan was voted out in April 2022. It won Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2013 and governed the province until governor’s rule was imposed there in October 2026.

Before the February 2024 election the party lost its cricket-bat symbol over its internal elections, so its candidates stood as independents. They won more seats than any single party, but the PML-N and the PPP formed the government. With Khan in jail, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has led the party as chairman since December 2023.
