Imran Khan

Former prime minister, founder of the PTI, and the most divisive figure in Pakistani politics, in prison since August 2023.

The essentials

Imran Khan captained Pakistan to the 1992 Cricket World Cup, founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 1996 and became prime minister after the 2018 general election. In April 2022 he became the first Pakistani prime minister to be removed by a vote of no confidence in parliament.

His arrest on 9 May 2023 set off riots in which military installations were attacked. He has been in custody since August 2023, held at Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, and in January 2025 he was sentenced to 14 years in prison in the Al-Qadir Trust case. He and his party call the cases political; the government says the courts are doing their work.
