TLDR:
• Dh1 million prizes for home designs
• Competition seeks sustainable, cultural designs
• Winning designs to shape UAE housing projects
DUBAI (The Thursday Times) — The second edition of the ‘House of the Future’ competition invites architects and designers globally to submit their vision for adaptable, aesthetically refined housing that embodies the UAE’s cultural heritage. Led by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation and the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme, this year’s competition sets stringent criteria for innovative, sustainable, and culturally resonant designs that can withstand environmental shifts. With a prize pool totalling Dh1 million, the competition promises opportunities for designers to see their ideas realised in future UAE housing projects.
The competition, in partnership with Buildner, demands submissions that showcase durability and adaptability, requiring at least three bedrooms, sustainable materials, and the flexibility to expand. Entries are expected to work within a budget of Dh800,000, addressing both aesthetic and functional aspects. The grand prize of Dh500,000 will reward the top design, with additional awards of Dh200,000 for the runner-up, Dh100,000 for third place, and a special Dh200,000 prize for outstanding use of sustainable building materials.
Cultural preservation and future vision
Participants must balance contemporary needs with the UAE’s cultural heritage, creating designs that align with the region’s traditions and future aspirations. Selected designs will be showcased on the Darek platform, helping citizens access cost-effective options for self-built homes. The goal is to blend forward-thinking architectural vision with a respect for the country’s architectural identity, positioning these projects as a bridge between tradition and innovation.
Global interest in visionary housing
The inaugural edition drew global attention, attracting over 3,500 submissions from more than 140 countries. This year, organisers anticipate even broader interest, as the competition underscores Dubai’s commitment to future-ready, sustainable living spaces. The Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme will provide technical and engineering assistance, ensuring that selected designs integrate seamlessly with the UAE’s vision for innovative urban development.
Entries can be submitted on the competition’s official platforms, https://houseofthefuture.ae and https://architecturecompetitions.com/houseofthefuture2, until early June 2025. For international and local architects, this initiative represents both a challenge and an opportunity to redefine modern living standards while honouring Emirati heritage in residential design.
Transforming UAE housing with innovation
Through this initiative, Dubai is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable and culturally-conscious urban planning, inviting the world’s brightest minds to contribute to its ambitious housing goals. The competition’s structured guidelines highlight the UAE’s emphasis on environmental sustainability and cultural fidelity, with an eye on establishing exemplary housing standards for generations to come.
