DUBAI (The Thursday Times) — In a striking achievement, Dubai has emerged as the most reputable city in the Middle East, placing fifth globally in the 2024 Brand Finance Global City Index. The city’s strategic advancements in investment appeal and reputation have propelled it past global contenders, securing its place behind only London, New York, Paris, and Tokyo. Dubai’s reputation leap aligns with its commitment to strong governance and effective investments, pushing it up four places from its ninth position last year.

The city’s progress reflects years of calculated economic and infrastructural investments, affirming its goal to become a global hub. According to Brand Finance, Dubai’s strategic allure for business and innovation—coupled with policies promoting economic stability and favourable corporate taxation—has significantly boosted its global consideration metrics. Additionally, Dubai has marked improvements in rankings for local working and remote working attractiveness, ascending from sixteenth to eighth and from twenty-fourth to fourth, respectively, indicating a broader appeal to the global workforce.

Middle East cities gaining ground globally

Other Middle Eastern cities like Riyadh and Jeddah have also advanced, climbing multiple positions in the index. Riyadh, for instance, saw substantial progress in areas like sports culture, education, and entertainment, becoming one of the fastest-growing cities in these categories. Jeddah also demonstrated gains, with both cities earning notable spots within the global list. This trend signifies a robust upward trajectory in Middle Eastern cities, emphasizing their increasing presence on the global stage.

While Abu Dhabi maintained its position from last year at thirtieth globally, it showed gains in areas of science, technology, and economic influence. This steady performance underscores the capital’s growing investment in innovative sectors, a move that aligns with the UAE’s broader vision for diversification and economic strength. The city’s stable standing in the index reflects a balanced approach, advancing its technological and scientific presence within the region and beyond.

In North Africa, cities like Cairo, Doha, Casablanca, and Tel Aviv contribute to the region’s presence in the global rankings, with varying degrees of progress and challenges. Tel Aviv’s position declined slightly due to regional conflicts, impacting its standing on the index. The overall progress across the Middle East and North Africa is testament to the region’s developmental strides, as governments continue to prioritize strategic sectors and enhance their cities’ global reputations.∎
