WASHINGTON (The Thursday Times) — President Donald Trump posted the terms of a US-Iran agreement on Truth Social on 29 May 2026 at 3:51pm Washington time, saying he was heading to the Situation Room to make a “final determination.” The post outlined five core elements of the agreement and announced that the US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will be lifted. At the same moment, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar was at the State Department in Washington meeting Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Pakistan’s top diplomat present in Washington as America’s top diplomat as Trump prepared to sign off on the deal Pakistan had spent weeks helping broker.
The Thursday Times has covered Pakistan’s central mediation role throughout. Read our report on Trump saying he gave Iran a chance because Pakistan asked here. Read our report on Iran publicly thanking Pakistan by name here.
What Trump posted
“Iran must agree that they will never have a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb. The Hormuz Strait must be immediately open, no tolls, for unrestricted shipping traffic, in both directions. All water mines, if any, will be terminated. Ships caught in the Strait due to our amazing and unprecedented Naval Blockade, which will now be lifted, may start the process of heading home. The enriched material, sometimes referred to as Nuclear Dust, buried deep underground will be unearthed by the United States, in close coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, plus the International Atomic Energy Agency, and DESTROYED. No money will be exchanged, until further notice. Other items, of far less importance, have been agreed to. I will be meeting now, in the Situation Room, to make a final determination.” President Donald Trump · Truth Social · 29 May 2026
The five deal elements
Trump’s post sets out the core elements of what has been agreed. Iran will never develop or acquire a nuclear weapon. The Strait of Hormuz will be immediately opened with no tolls and unrestricted shipping in both directions. All water mines will be removed or detonated, with the US having already swept numerous mines with underwater mine sweepers and Iran completing the remainder. Iran’s enriched nuclear material buried underground following last year’s B2 bomber strikes will be unearthed jointly by the US and China in coordination with Iran and the IAEA and destroyed. No financial transfers will take place until further notice. Trump noted that “other items, of far less importance, have been agreed to” without specifying what those items are.
Dar in Washington as Trump heads to the Situation Room
The timing of Ishaq Dar’s Washington visit is not incidental. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister was at the State Department meeting Secretary of State Marco Rubio at 10am Washington time on 29 May 2026, confirmed on the State Department’s official public schedule. As Trump posted the deal terms and headed to the Situation Room hours later, Pakistan’s top diplomat was still in Washington. The State Department meeting was described by Pakistan’s Foreign Office as focused on bilateral relations, regional developments and Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace and stability through dialogue and diplomacy.
Pakistan has been the primary mediator in the US-Iran negotiations since the original ceasefire on 8 April 2026. Field Marshal Asim Munir flew to Tehran for overnight negotiations on 22 and 23 May. Dar met his Iranian counterpart multiple times during the mediation process. On 27 May Trump said he gave Iran a chance because Pakistan asked him to, calling Field Marshal Munir and PM Shehbaz Sharif “great.” Read our report on Munir telling China’s Wang Yi the deal was close to being reached here.
What comes next
Trump’s post confirms he has not yet signed the final agreement. He said he was heading to the Situation Room to make a “final determination.” Iran has not yet issued a public response to the deal terms as posted.
