— Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Tuesday with a delegation of Pakistani officials for talks with senior Iranian officials, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported.

The visit is the latest in a series of trips to the Iranian capital by the chief of army staff and chief of defence forces as part of Pakistan’s ongoing mediation between Iran and the United States. On 24 August, Munir visited Tehran alongside Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for talks focused on regional de-escalation, breaking the military stalemate and exploring a negotiated settlement.

Islamabad’s mediation had produced an interim peace agreement, the Islamabad Memorandum, signed in June, but the accord quickly faltered amid renewed fighting between Iran and the United States.

The visit comes a day after Naqvi reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to mediating between Washington and Tehran, telling the Global Security Forum in Doha that Islamabad “never gave up” on the peace efforts despite difficult moments during the conflict. Naqvi credited Munir with a “remarkable role” in bringing the two sides closer, and recalled the 18 June signing of the 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and the subsequent Lake Lucerne Summit in Switzerland, organised jointly by Pakistan and Qatar.∎
