RAWALPINDI (The Thursday Times) — Pakistan’s armed forces destroyed several Afghan Taliban checkposts on Tuesday night after fire from across the border killed a civilian and wounded five members of the same family in the Angoor Adda area of South Waziristan, security sources said.
Afghan Taliban forces targeted the civilian population along the border, the sources said, and the army responded swiftly, hitting and destroying several of their checkposts. The military’s response was continuing, they said, and troops remained on high alert to counter any further aggression.
Angoor Adda has seen repeated cross-border violence. In late April, mortar fire from across the border wounded civilians and damaged homes in South Waziristan, prompting Pakistani forces to strike Afghan Taliban positions. Hostilities flared again after Pakistan launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq in February.
Islamabad has repeatedly called on Kabul to stop terrorist groups from using Afghan soil to attack Pakistan, a charge the Taliban regime denies. On Monday, Pakistan rejected as baseless the Taliban’s claims of civilian casualties in its counter-terror operations. Pakistan has long described Afghanistan as a global hub of terrorism, and security forces have been fighting terrorists across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including in Dera Ismail Khan.
