— A police constable was martyred and two people were wounded on Saturday when gunmen opened fire outside a courtroom inside the Judicial Complex in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district.

Constable Karamatullah was killed on the spot outside the court of an additional sessions judge, District Headquarters Hospital spokesman Jalal Khan said. Advocate Javed Iqbal, the Pakistan Peoples Party’s district information secretary, was hit by bullets, and a second man, Inshaullah, was also wounded. Both were moved to Bannu for treatment.

The attackers fired indiscriminately outside the courtroom, sending lawyers, litigants and visitors running for cover. A heavy contingent of police reached the complex, sealed it and suspended all entry and exit while an investigation was launched to identify those responsible and establish the motive.

The shooting came a day after three policemen were martyred in terrorist attacks in Bannu, Lakki Marwat and Bajaur, including Constable Mumtaz, who was shot near a bank in Lakki Marwat. Earlier on Saturday, gunmen wounded Mansehra’s assistant commissioner in an attack on his vehicle in Nowshera.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has borne the brunt of a surge in terrorism, with police and security personnel the target of most attacks in the province this year.
