DULUTH (The Thursday Times) — Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and Husband Killed in Politically Charged Attack.
In a harrowing escalation of politically motivated violence in the United States, former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, were fatally shot at their home in Brooklyn Park early Friday morning. Authorities say the assailant, armed and impersonating law enforcement, forced his way into the couple’s home under false pretences before opening fire.
The attack, which has left the state reeling, appears to be part of a wider pattern. Just hours earlier, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot at their residence in nearby Champlin. Both survived after undergoing emergency surgery and are currently in stable condition. Officials believe the same suspect is responsible for both shootings.
Law enforcement officials have launched a full-scale manhunt and issued a shelter-in-place order for a three-mile radius surrounding Brooklyn Park. The suspect—dressed in body armour, wielding a badge, and driving a vehicle equipped with police-style lights—engaged in a shootout with police officers at the scene of the Hortman residence, but escaped on foot. A search of the suspect’s vehicle later uncovered a manifesto containing the names of other political figures, sparking heightened security alerts across the state.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described the killings as a “politically motivated assassination” and an “unspeakable tragedy,” while calling for calm in the face of growing threats to public officials. “This is not just an attack on individuals. It’s an attack on democracy,” said Walz, who has ordered flags to half-mast and enhanced security for elected officials statewide.
The attack has ignited national concern over the intensifying threat environment surrounding public servants in the U.S., where political polarisation and extremist rhetoric have increasingly given way to violence. Prominent voices, including former Congresswoman and gun violence survivor Gabrielle Giffords, expressed outrage over the killings, calling them a warning of the dangerous path American politics is taking.
Melissa Hortman, a Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party stalwart, served as Speaker of the Minnesota House and was known for her fierce advocacy on climate, education, and equity issues. She had recently stepped down from her legislative leadership role, though she remained politically active.
