— Senior journalist Azhar Javaid has been elected chairman of the Pakistan Press Club UK after two bodies, Pakistan Press Club UK and Pakistan Press Club UK International, merged into a single organisation for Pakistani journalists in Britain.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Tipu Usman, received a delegation from the unified club led by Javaid at the High Commission in London, according to a press release. Journalists from London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bradford and Sheffield attended, and Usman and the club’s president, Arshad Rachyal, formally handed Javaid the notification of his appointment.

Javaid is a London-based journalist and political commentator with more than three decades in the profession. He has worked for Pakistani news organisations including Geo News, ARY News, Dunya News, Samaa TV and Daily Minute Mirror, and has held senior roles running international newsgathering.

Usman stressed the need for closer engagement with the Pakistani diaspora in Britain, particularly younger people, and described the High Commission’s work to help Pakistanis living across the UK. He said community organisations played an important part in keeping the diaspora connected with Pakistan.

The merger is expected to give Pakistani journalists in the UK a collective voice and strengthen professional cooperation and media networking among them, the release said.
