— The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has told formula milk makers and importers to print “Mother’s milk is best for babies” on their packaging and labels, in both Urdu and English.

Companies must also explain the benefits and importance of breastfeeding on the information panels of their products. The order also covers formula for children aged one to three, whether made in Pakistan or imported.

The step follows directions from the Senate Standing Committee on Health. According to available accounts, it changes labels and does not restrict sales, and companies have been told to comply without delay, though no deadline has been reported.

Dr Khalid Shafi, Secretary-General of the Pakistan Pediatric Association, has said newborns should get mother’s milk within the first hour of birth and only mother’s milk for the first six months. If your child is on formula, speak to your doctor before making any change.
