CUPERTINO (The Thursday Times) — Apple today announced the release of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, powered by the A18 Pro chip and designed for Apple Intelligence. These new models introduce larger displays, advanced pro camera capabilities, immersive gaming experiences, and unprecedented battery life. Apple Intelligence brings generative models directly to iPhone, offering a personal intelligence system that adapts to user needs while safeguarding privacy. The iPhone 16 Pro lineup also features Camera Control, offering users a streamlined way to interact with the camera system. Both models are equipped with a 48MP Fusion camera that supports 4K120 fps video recording in Dolby Vision, delivering the highest video resolution ever on an iPhone.
The new iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max feature a durable yet lightweight titanium design, with larger displays and the thinnest borders seen on any Apple device to date. They are available in four striking finishes: black, natural, white, and desert titanium. Pre-orders begin Friday, September 13, with availability starting Friday, September 20.
“With the powerful A18 Pro chip and Apple Intelligence, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max take our most advanced technologies to new heights,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. “From effortless photo editing and enhanced camera features to immersive gaming experiences, these models offer a huge leap forward, all while providing extraordinary battery life.”
The iPhone 16 Pro lineup introduces Apple Intelligence, leveraging Apple silicon and generative models to simplify daily tasks and improve productivity. Apple Intelligence protects user data through Private Cloud Compute, balancing on-device processing with Apple silicon servers for enhanced privacy. Features such as systemwide Writing Tools, personalised notifications, and deeper Siri integration make communication and task management more intuitive.
Writing Tools allow users to adjust the tone and structure of emails, summarise text, and transcribe audio recordings. Siri’s improved language understanding offers more natural interaction, maintaining context and responding flexibly. Users can also seamlessly switch between typing and voice commands, and Siri can answer questions about iPhone features or take actions across apps. More Apple Intelligence features, including Image Playground and personalised Genmoji, will be available later this year.
The iPhone 16 Pro lineup introduces the largest iPhone displays ever, with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR screens on the Pro and Pro Max models, respectively. These devices feature Always-On and ProMotion technology, offering unparalleled clarity and durability with Ceramic Shield, which is 2x tougher than any other smartphone glass. The new internal design improves heat dissipation and power efficiency, enabling up to 20% better sustained performance. With larger batteries, the iPhone 16 Pro Max delivers the best battery life ever on an iPhone.
The new Camera Control system allows users to interact with the camera quickly and intuitively, with tactile buttons and touch-based adjustments for zoom, exposure, and depth of field. A two-stage shutter will roll out later this year, making it easier to lock focus and reframe shots. Camera Control also introduces visual intelligence for faster recognition of objects and places.
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max feature a new 48MP Fusion camera, capable of recording 4K120 fps in Dolby Vision for stunning high-resolution video. The 48MP Ultra Wide camera now supports autofocus and macro photography, and the 5x Telephoto camera is available on both models. Studio-quality mics and Spatial Audio recording bring video sound to life, while Audio Mix offers advanced post-capture sound editing for true-to-life playback.
The A18 Pro chip delivers unparalleled efficiency and performance, built on second-generation 3-nanometer technology. The 16-core Neural Engine and 6-core GPU provide faster graphics and machine learning capabilities, ideal for pro tasks like 4K120 fps video editing and immersive gaming with hardware-accelerated ray tracing. The new chip also drives innovations in Apple Intelligence and Camera Control, enhancing overall device performance.
iPhone 16 Pro introduces expanded safety features, including Emergency SOS via satellite, which allows users to send texts and access roadside assistance when outside of cellular range. Messages via satellite are end-to-end encrypted and available in the U.S., U.K., and select regions.
Apple continues to prioritise sustainability with over 25% recycled content in the iPhone 16 Pro lineup. The internal structural frame uses 100% recycled aluminum, and the battery is made with 100% recycled cobalt. Packaging is entirely fiber-based, aligning with Apple’s commitment to eliminating plastic by 2025.
iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 (U.S.), and iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at $1,199 (U.S.). Pre-orders begin on September 13, with availability starting on September 20 in over 58 countries and regions. The devices will also be available in Macao, Vietnam, and 19 other regions starting September 27.
