— Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital five days after collapsing at the club’s training ground, with doctors tracing the cause to an inflammation of the membranes around his brain and spinal cord.

“It’s a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. He will now rest and take medication,” Bayern’s sporting board member Max Eberl told German broadcaster ARD on Wednesday. “He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.”

“Given the circumstances, he’s doing well,” Eberl said. “I am very confident that he will be back on the touchline, operating at 100% very soon.”

‘Weeks, not days’

Kompany, 40, was rushed to hospital last Friday after falling ill while watching Bayern’s second team train. He had been fighting a virus in the days before and missed some training sessions, as well as the news conference before last week’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal, though he was on the touchline for the match.

No date has been set for his return, and Bayern said on Saturday it would be a matter of “weeks, not days”. English assistant Aaron Danks has taken charge in his absence and oversaw a 3-1 win at Freiburg on Sunday.

The former Manchester City captain has led Bayern to the top of the Bundesliga, with Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane leading the attack. The leaders host title rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
