— Pakistani security forces hit several Afghan border posts and mortar positions near Angoor Adda in South Waziristan on Sunday after what officials called unprovoked firing from across the border, forcing Afghan Taliban personnel to abandon their positions, the Lower South Waziristan deputy commissioner said.

In a statement on X, the deputy commissioner said the firing on Pakistani border posts was continuing and that security forces had responded immediately, targeting Afghan border posts, mortar positions and defensive positions. Afghan Taliban personnel fled their posts after the response, he said, adding that no casualties had been reported so far in Pakistani border areas and that forces were ready to answer any aggression.

It is the latest flare-up around Angoor Adda after a week of clashes. One person was killed and five members of a family were wounded in cross-border fire earlier in the week, and the army said it had destroyed more Afghan Taliban posts in response. Pakistan has also dismissed Kabul’s account of the fighting as fabricated.

The military’s spokesperson, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, said in remarks published on Sunday that the Afghan Taliban could not absorb the “punishment” Pakistan could inflict. Islamabad accuses the Taliban of harbouring terrorists who attack Pakistan, which Kabul denies.
