DUBAI (The Thursday Times) — Just stepped off your flight into Dubai and feeling a little overwhelmed about where to start? Whether you’re fresh off a short-haul or long-haul flight to DXB, one of the first things you’ll need to tackle as a new resident is getting your Emirates ID. It’s your golden ticket to accessing essential services in the UAE, like opening a bank account, signing up for utilities, or even just getting your mobile plan sorted. Not sure where to begin? Don’t worry! Visiting an AMER Centre can make the process quick and painless. Here’s everything you need to know to get your Emirates ID sorted.

What is an Emirates ID?

The Emirates ID is a mandatory identification card issued by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP). It contains all your vital information, including your full name, nationality, and a unique Emirates ID number. The card is embedded with an electronic chip that stores your personal data securely, making it essential for everything from signing up for government services to renting an apartment.

Should you do it yourself, or visit an AMER Center?

While it’s possible to apply for an Emirates ID online or through an ICP Service Centre, an AMER Centre offers a one-stop solution for all your visa and ID needs. AMER Centres are government-authorised service hubs that provide everything from residency visa applications to Emirates ID services under one roof. They are efficient, staffed by experts, and located across Dubai, making them easily accessible.

Here’s why choosing an AMER Centre can make the process easier:

  • Expert assistance: The staff at AMER Centres are trained to handle all aspects of residency and ID services, reducing the likelihood of errors in your application.
  • Quick processing: AMER Centres are known for faster processing times, especially if you’re looking to complete both your residency and Emirates ID applications.
  • Multiple services in one location: You can apply for your residency visa, Emirates ID, and even take care of medical exams all in one place.

Step 1: Secure your UAE residency visa

Before you can apply for an Emirates ID, you need to secure a UAE residency visa. This visa can be obtained through your employer, family sponsorship, or a business visa. The process is usually handled by your sponsor (employer or family member), but you can also visit an AMER Centre to apply for or finalise your residency visa. Once your visa is processed, it will be stamped in your passport, and you will be eligible to apply for an Emirates ID.

Step 2: Apply for your Emirates ID

After receiving your residency visa, head to an AMER Centre to start your Emirates ID application. Here’s how to go about it:

  1. Visit an AMER Centre: Go to any of the AMER Centres located across Dubai. You can find centres in various locations, including Al Karama, Dubai Festival City, and Al Qusais. Make sure to carry your passport and residency visa.
  2. Submit Your Application: At the AMER Centre, you can submit your Emirates ID application. The staff will guide you through the form and ensure that all your details are correctly entered. You will also be required to pay the application fee, which varies depending on the validity of your residency visa (1, 2, or 3 years).
  3. Document Submission: Provide original copies of the following documents:
    • Passport with your residency visa stamped.
    • Completed Emirates ID application form.
    • Any additional documents requested by the AMER Centre staff.
  4. Get Your Medical Exam (if applicable): If you haven’t already completed your mandatory medical exam (required for your residency visa), many AMER Centres offer medical testing services on-site. This can save you a trip to another facility.

Step 3: Complete biometric scanning

Once you’ve submitted your Emirates ID application, you’ll need to complete a biometric scan. This includes fingerprints and a photo. If you are a first-time applicant, you must visit a biometric enrolment centre after your application. Many AMER Centres have biometric facilities on-site, ensuring a faster process.

After the biometric data is captured, the system automatically links it to your Emirates ID application.

Step 4: Track your Emirates ID application

After submitting your application and completing the biometric process, you can track the status of your Emirates ID. AMER Centres provide this service, or you can track it yourself via the ICP website by entering your application number or residency file number. The process usually takes 7 to 10 working days, depending on the volume of applications at the time.

Step 5: Collect your Emirates ID

Once your Emirates ID is ready, you will receive an SMS notification. You can either pick up the card from the designated Emirates Post office or, in some cases, have it delivered to your home address (a service you can request when submitting your application at an AMER Centre). Make sure to bring your passport or a copy of your visa for identification when collecting your ID.

Why getting an Emirates ID is crucial

Having an Emirates ID is essential for daily life in the UAE. Here’s why it’s important:

  • Accessing government services: You will need your Emirates ID for everything from registering for utilities to applying for government permits.
  • Healthcare: The Emirates ID is used for medical appointments, health insurance registration, and receiving healthcare services.
  • Banking: Opening a bank account in Dubai requires a valid Emirates ID.
  • Mobile plans: To register for a mobile phone plan, your Emirates ID is mandatory.
  • Travelling within the GCC: The Emirates ID allows residents to travel to some GCC countries without needing their passports.

Renewing or replacing your Emirates ID

If your Emirates ID is about to expire or has been lost, you can easily renew or replace it at an AMER Centre. It’s advisable to start the renewal process 30 days before your ID’s expiry date to avoid any fines or penalties. The process is similar to the initial application and can be completed at an AMER Centre.

Documents required for an Emirates ID application

Here is a summary of the documents you’ll need for your Emirates ID application:

  • Passport with a valid UAE residency visa.
  • Emirates ID application form (can be done at an AMER Centre).
  • Medical test results (if applicable).
  • Biometric data (for first-time applicants).
  • Payment receipt for the Emirates ID fees.
