PALO ALTO (The Thursday Times) — In a significant disruption that started around 10AM ET (8PM PKT) today, users across the globe are facing difficulties accessing Meta-owned services, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The issues range from login problems on Facebook, where users are being forcibly logged out and are unable to regain access, to Instagram where feeds are not refreshing for many, including staff members at The Thursday Times. The latest addition to the list of affected platforms is Threads, which is displaying a generic error message to users attempting to access the service.
Meta has publicly acknowledged the problems through its status page, with a message posted at 10:17AM ET stating, “We are aware of an issue impacting Facebook Login. Our engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” Andy Stone, the communications head at Meta, further confirmed the ongoing issues via a tweet on X, noting that the company is aware of the access difficulties and is currently working towards a resolution.
This is not the first time Meta platforms have experienced such a large-scale outage. A similar incident occurred back in 2021, attributed to a configuration error, which resulted in extended downtime for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Interestingly, WhatsApp appears to be unaffected by the current issues plaguing its sister services.
In addition to social media platforms, some users have reported problems with logging into their Meta Quest headsets, indicating a broader issue with Meta’s infrastructure.
Real-time outage tracking services like DownDetector have shown a significant spike in reports for all three platforms since this morning. Moreover, global network trackers such as NetBlocks have confirmed that the outage is not limited to any specific region but is affecting multiple countries simultaneously.
Despite attempts to reach Meta for further comments, The Thursday Times has yet to receive a response. As the situation develops, many are left wondering about the cause of the outage and when access to their favorite social media platforms will be restored. Meta’s past experiences with outages suggest that resolving such issues can take time, but the company’s acknowledgment of the problem is a first step towards recovery. Users are advised to stay tuned for updates as Meta’s engineering teams work to restore normal service as quickly as possible.
